yes, that is the litteral translation and not incorrect...but when used in conversation (which i have) it means any # of explicatives. so it is possible that we are all correct. when one the french students saw it on my computer (he was looking at my pictures on the computer), he laughed and repeated outloud, "shit, it's the war" technically shit is "merde"- but that isn't considered vulgar in french, so putain is the more vulgar translation. there is a difference between a litteral translation and a translation of meaning. BTW- fuck has about 5 translations in french depending on who and why you are using the word...(remember the e-mail on the most useful word in the english language?)
